Deathstalker Venom: From Poison To Cure?
For centuries, the desert-dwelling arachnids known as scorpions have been seen as creatures of dark repute. Their form is alien-looking to most humans, giving an air of otherworldliness. The secretive nature of the species has kept most humans from observing them thoroughly. Even if there were those who knew where to look, the venom in the scorpion’s stingers often sent fools scampering for pain relief within seconds of being stung. There are also the unlucky who suffer from agonizing pain and slow torment until the venom takes its course and leaves them dead. However, there are more aspects to the scorpion and its venom than pain and the need for pain relief and anti-venom.
Bird Watching Mecca 338 Species At Acadia National Park
When it comes to birding, Acadia National Park is a mecca for sightings. The Park has 338 bird species, which is a record for any national park in the United States. The list of species includes such rare birds as the bald eagle, 23 warbler variations and falcons by the bushel load. If youre looking to fill out your life list, Acadia is the place to be.
The park has such a wide variety of bird species because of a unique environment. Part of the park consists of offshore islands that provide protected nooks and crannies that are ideal for nesting. To this end, numerous species use these island nooks as their southern breeding headquarters. Nesting species include eiders in addition to other sea birds, herons and raptors. Sandpipers and a wide variety of ducks can also be found on the islands.
In addition to the nesting areas, Acadia is famous for its rare, predatory species. The park is home to a wide variety of eagles, including the bald eagle, and falcons. Indeed, Acadia is the home of the very rare Peregrine Falcon, which was nearly pushed to extinction in 1964. Reintroduced to Acadia in the mid 1980s, the Peregrines have flourished and established nesting patters in the park.
If youre looking to add to your life list, Acadia National Park is a destination you must visit. Heres a list of bird species you just might see:

The Reasons for Joining in a Defensive Driving Course
Imagine the number of accidents you see on highways and byways. Thing for a moment the pain one undergoes when injured and pain it causes to the dear ones. No matter whether you are a novice or an expert driver, it is always a wise idea to take the defensive driving course. These course are gaining widespread popularity from all quarters for simple reason that road safety is increasing becoming a global problem.
Perhaps the most attractive reason is that the insurance companies offer varying discounts from 2-10% for taking and completing the driving course. These defensive driving courses differ from one another. A traditional course is generally more expensive from others that are available. If cost and time makes one think on joining a classroom course, they are also offered through correspondence and online.
Perhaps the most popular reasons that can be attributed to taking such course are – it improves the driving skills, helps reduce the chances of an accident and perhaps the compelling reason could be – it is court ordered. In place of a fine or jail time, the court orders a defensive driving course for the erring drivers.
The most common factors that need to be looked into when joining these courses are the different options that come with it. The best one that one could recommend is the traditional classroom course. For those couldn’t make it to the classroom course, thanks to technology, the course is available at your doorstep.
Guitars The Fender Stratocaster Is A Thing Of Dreams
The very first guitar I ever played was a Candy Apple Red Fender Stratocaster. It was love at first touch. I wanted that guitar SO bad. I grew up listening to Eric Clapton, David Gilmore and Jimmy Hendrix, and during my college years I was a huge fan of Stevie Ray Vaughn. The Fender Stratocaster was the guitar of choice for these incredible guitar players and many more.
My tasted in guitars evolved as I learned, and I discovered that every guitar had their own personality in my hands. Some were sassy and bright, others were bad and loud, and still others just wanted to sing the blues. One of the coolest parts about owning a music store was being able to play thousands of different guitars of all makes and styles.
But my roots have always been with the Fender Strat. The secret to the amazing tone for the Strat lies in the traditional single could pickups, two piece body and the types of tone woods used to make the guitar. Fender offers the same pickups played by Jimmy Hendrix, or Eric Clapton. Fenders custom shop 69 pickups will do the trick, or if youre into Stevie Ray Vaughn you need Fenders Tex-Mex specials.
Probably the best way to play the same guitar as your guitar heroes is to purchase their signature model. Fender has signature models available for Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Robert Cray, Robin Trower, Rory Gallagher, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Buddy Guy, Yngwie Malmsteen, Eric Johnson and more.
Rather a c or v neck dressed up in maple or rosewood, nothing feels like a Stratocaster and nothing plays or sounds the same. In everyones life a little rain must fall, and in every guitarist life a Stratocaster must be played.
Strats are best known for their warm unique tone, but not all Strats are created equally. The tonal range will depend on the tone woods used in the neck and body as well as the type and configuration of pickups. When selecting a Strat to purchase take your time and research the various online forums to learn everything about the model you want to purchase. You may even want to visit your local retailer and play a few, just to get a better feel for the playability of the model you desire. Sometimes you may find that what you think you want and what you really like are quite different. Once you are convinced of what you HAVE TO HAVE, you should check out the various online retailers. In most cases you will find better prices on line then at your local store.
Buying your Strat will be one of the best days of your life. So enjoy every moment and remember that you are not purchasing just a guitar, you are purchasing something from your dreams.
Get a Stop-Smoking Vaccine to Help You Quit
If you have been smoking cigarettes for one year or many years, youll know how addictive they are. Your body gets used to the nicotine and the smoking habit, and it lets you know when you need to have a smoke break. What if you could free yourself of that craving, and improve your health at the same time? A stop-smoking vaccine, or injection, can help you do just that.
There are various methods and products available to help you quit smoking, and each one of them is effective for some people but not for others. Some of these methods include natural herbs, nicotine-free cigarettes, nicotine gum and patches. One of the methods that has proven to be most effective, with over 70 per cent of smokers having success in quitting, is the stop-smoking vaccine.
The vaccine, which must be administered by a doctor, works rapidly once you receive it to block the receptors in your brain which recognize and crave nicotine. Stopping the craving for nicotine is the most difficult and important part in quitting smoking, and the results of this vaccine show themselves almost overnight. Once you no longer have to worry about craving nicotine, you will have more energy and willpower to devote to breaking the smoking habit.
Along with the need for nicotine, there is simply a habit in stopping for smoke breaks, having something in your hands, and the social part of talking with others about your day while having a cigarette. You can learn to replace these habits with other, healthier behaviors that dont make you crave a cigarette. Try talking on the phone, or going outside for a five-minute walk. Even chewing gum can help break old habits.
Your doctor will be able to provide you with all of the information you need on stop-smoking vaccines, including how effective it will be for you, if there are any possible side effects, and what the cost will be. Although the cost of the vaccine is not incredibly high, you may consider it out of your budget. But take a minute to think about two things: how much you would spend on cigarettes over the course of your life, and what types of health problems you could end up with from smoking. This helps to put the cost of the vaccine in perspective, and youll realize that it is definitely worth investing in.

Swinging For The Gold
The San Diego Golf Academy (SDGA) is teaming together with the Honolulu Advertiser for the second year at the annual Swing for the Gold golf tournament to benefit Special Olympics Hawaii. The event will take place on Friday, August 11th at 11.30 a.m. at the Hawaii Prince Golf Club. Paul Zagnoni, President of SDGA, promises a fun-filled day of golf followed by an awards dinner celebrating the Honolulu Advertisers Sesquicentennial anniversary.
Swing for Gold is part of Special Olympics Hawaii, which conducts a year-round program of physical training and competition at local, area and chapter levels. During the Special Olympics athletes compete at local and area events prior to advancing to the chapter level competition. Special Olympics Hawaii athletes are offered the opportunity to participate and compete in clinics, camps and competitions in the following sports and events: Aquatics, Athletics, Basketball, Bocce, Bowling, Fitness, Power Lifting, Soccer, Softball, Tennis and Speed Skating.
The story of Special Olympics Inc. begins back in 1946 when the Kennedy family founded the Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr., Foundation, to honor the memory of Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr., who was killed in World War II. The foundations mission was to learn how to prevent mental retardation, and to improve society’s treatment of people with mental retardation.
In the 1950s Eunice and Robert Sargent Shriver came into the picture; two remarkable individuals who dedicated their lives to helping people with disabilities. After discovering that people in the United States with mental disabilities had the greatest unmet needs in all of the nation’s health care delivery systems, they were inspired to start a summer day camp for 100 mentally disabled adults and children at their home in Rockville, MD.
The day camp was a huge success, and demonstrated that people with mental disabilities could not only participate in a wide range of recreational activities, but that they also enjoyed them tremendously and benefited greatly from the experience. As a result, the foundation awarded more than 80 small grants to organizations throughout the USA, enabling them to create similar day camps in many communities.
Special Olympics Inc. was originally established in December 1968, as a non-profit organization, to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with mental challenges. The program also helps to foster increased understanding and integration of people with mental retardation in the general community. All the money raised in Hawaii stays in Hawaii to establish and maintain programs for the thousands of people with mental disabilities that live throughout the state.
People wishing to support Swing for the Gold golf tournament can choose to become bronze, silver or gold sponsors, or make a regular donation. The last day for sponsorship is July 21st

iSCSI vs. FC for Meeting Mission Critical Requirements
Introduction
Mission Critical Data is just what its name says: critical to the core functioning of an enterprise. Mission critical data must be available 24×7 and fully backed up for immediate recovery in the event of disaster. Enterprises are constantly seeking more reliable, more efficient, more convenient and more affordable ways of meeting these needs. SANRADs V-Switch 3000 uses Iscsi technology to centrally consolidate, manage, backup and restore mission critical data at a fraction of the cost, in capital and human resources, of existing FC SAN technologies
Mission Critical Requirements and SANRADs Solutions
Storage Area Networks (SANs) are used to manage mission critical data and, as they have developed, storage and network administrators have identified three main requirements on a SAN to manage this critical data:
High Availability: Storage systems and their mission critical data must be available 24×7. There is no leeway for downtime. Every minute of downtime equals a loss of revenues and credibility for an enterprise.
Remote Backup and Recovery: Data must be backed up off site to enable remote recovery in the event of disaster. Experts estimate that 30% of companies could not recover from a catastrophic loss of data and having backups on premises is of no use if the premises are destroyed.
Manageability: A SAN management system must be able to be centrally managed and provide a consolidated storage solution accommodating different storage subsystems and infrastructures. In addition, the SAN management must not exert added strain on the network and storage
administration staff.
Dynamic Expandability: Storage networks must be able to grow with an enterprise. Systems cannot be taken offline to accommodate this growth and no one wants to search for new storage management solutions every time there is a growth spurt. SANRAD has taken these requirements and provided comprehensive solutions in a single centrally managed platform using iSCSI technology.
SANRADs High Availability: The V-Switch 3000 hardware is fully redundant to weather power, processor and fan failures. The V-Switch 3000 configuration database is written to both flash and compact flash memory. The software IP-based SAN configuration provides automatic V-Switch 3000 failover and failback as well as data mirroring. No single point of failure ensures high availability.
SANRADs Remote Backup and Recovery: The V-Switch 3000 can create global IPbased storage networks to allow mission critical data transfer to remote sites within the IP SAN.
SANRADs Manageability: The V-Switch 3000 enables storage pooling across multiple platforms and infrastructures and eliminates the need for host agents. The V-Switch 3000 functions at the network layer and is therefore independent of host OS and storage vendors. The V-Switch 3000 provides storage virtualization and precise LUN carving of the pooled storage,
supporting volume concatenation, mirroring and striping. The locally accessed GUI-based Storage Pro management server is used to centrally configure volumes, monitor status and manage the storage pool.
SANRADs Dynamic Expandability: The V-Switch 3000 uses existing adapters, network and disk subsystems to form a sophisticated SAN solution ranging from 72 GB to 16 TB. New storage devices can be added dynamically and their volumes virtualized in real time without taking the system offline or impacting on functioning volume performance. Two V-Switch 3000s can be combined in a SAN to form a cluster to provide inter-V-Switch 3000 load balancing and failover.
Benefits of iSCSI SAN over FC SAN
When creating a SAN, enterprises find that the traditional answer is FC SAN. However, the investment required to implement an FC SAN is often beyond the means of a young enterprise. As a result, growing enterprises may find themselves delaying the inevitable upgrade to a SAN and, therefore, gambling with their mission critical data store.
The FC investment comes from four fronts:
Infrastructure: An FC network demands FC switches, hubs and bridges along with specific GBICs and cabling. In addition, each host requires dedicated FC HBAs.
Storage Devices: The storage devices must be costly FC RAID arrays. If an enterprise wants to maintain its JBOD stores, it must purchase virtualization appliances to convert the JBODs for use in an FC SAN.
Software: A variety of software tools is needed to manage all of this new equipment as well as the dedicated FC HBAs.
Human Resources: dedicated group of FC storage and networking IT administrators is needed to manage all of this. For a growing enterprise, this represents a sizable investment in capital and human resources to acquire,
implement and manage only one aspect of the enterprises data flow.
SANRADs V-Switch 3000 provides a single integrated hardware/software solution to SAN management:
Infrastructure: The V-Switch 3000 uses an enterprises existing IP infrastructure including existing Ethernet switches, cabling, GBICs and SFPs. A hosts existing NIC is all that is needed to connect to the SAN.
Storage Devices: The V-Switch 3000 supports existing legacy storage devices, both FC & SCSI, RAID & JBOD, so there is no need to purchase new storage devices. Due to the V-Switch 3000s storage pooling capabilities, enterprises may have an increase in usable storage space.
Software: The V-Switch 3000 has both hardware and a software component. There is no need for additional software beyond the included Storage Pro storage management tool.
Human Resources: Because the V-Switch 3000 operates over the enterprises existing Internet network, minimal additional knowledge or training is needed to implement or manage the SAN. The existing network or storage administrator is readily qualified to manage SANRADs Iscsi SAN.
Business Case: V-Switch 3000 vs. FC
Typical SAN topographies can be divided into 5 groups according to the number of servers accessing the
SAN and the net storage capacity of the SAN.
Small: 8 servers accessing a net capacity of 500GB.
Small Medium: 12 servers accessing a net capacity of 1TB.
Medium: 16 servers accessing a net capacity of 1.5TB.
Medium High: 24 servers accessing a net capacity of 2TB.
High: 32 servers accessing a net capacity of 3TB.
To best understand the budgetary impact of implementing an FC SAN compared to a SANRAD iSCSI SAN, consider the costs of each for a medium enterprise with sixteen hosts accessing a storage pool of 1.5TB.
In an FC SAN, this would require two FC switches. Upstream of the FC switches there are five server clusters, including Exchange, SQL and file servers, plus six individual servers. Each server requires FC software and each server has two HBAs, each connected to a different switch for a total of thirty-two HBAs. Downstream of the FC switches is a RAID system with RAID 5 and hot spare capabilities and a net capacity of 1.5TB.
In a SANRAD V-Switch 3000 SAN, this would also require two V-Switch 3000s. Upstream of the V-Switch 3000s there are two multi-Gbit switches but no special host software or HBAs are required. Downstream of the V-Switch 3000s are the legacy SCSI or FC JBODs with a net mirrored capacity of 1.5TB.
For a medium enterprise, implementing an FC SAN for Mission Critical Data is more than two times as expensive as a SANRAD iSCSI SAN. This expense does not take into consideration the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO), e.g. FC cabling installation costs; cost of human resources to regularly upgrade FC
software and maintain two separate networks or the cost of replacing an FC RAID unit compared to a JBOD disk. As the size of an enterprise grows, the cost par between FC and iSCSI SAN grows.
Conclusion
SANRAD iSCSI SAN provides all of the key SAN requirements needed to manage, backup and restore mission critical data with added benefits over FC SAN. SANRADs V-Switch 3000 represents a single integrated hardware/software solution to SAN management, including storage pooling, virtualization, mirroring, striping and remote backup. The IP-based iSCSI SAN permits remote storage access and provides greater flexibility in the location of network and storage components within an enterprise and it
does so at a fraction of the cost of an FC SAN.
Make Up to $3,500 and More Weekly
Everybody would love to make lots of money quickly, working from home, and only doing a few hours of work per week. I’ve spent the past two years trying to find a great way of doing this. Only over the course of the past few months have I found any “get rich quick” programs worth buying. I’ve been trying to make money online for a long time. I had a few small websites, but they never made much more than a few hundred per month. It was easy money and didn’t require much work on my part, but I knew there were people out there doing better than I was and I knew I could do as well as them.
Holiday Blues Are Just Around The Bend
Holidays, such as Thanksgiving and Christmas, are usually the most awaited events of the year. It is a time when families gather for a reunion with relatives and friends. While it is a time for gift-giving and merry-making, it can also be a source of stress and depression. During these times, when the whole world is in a spirit of celebration, there are some people who can only wish there were loved ones nearby to share the season with. Think about the senior citizens in welfare homes, those convicts in jail houses, the doctors and nurses who are on duty and cannot come home to be with their loved ones. There are those whose loved ones are long gone or have recently departed and coping with their loss can be unbearable during this season. Even the loss of job during this time can cause depression. Being hard-pressed to buy presents for loved ones can lead to stress and anxiety.
Depression and Food Binging in the Family
Young women who grow up surrounded by family problems and any form of abuse are at high risk of getting eating disorders like anorexia or bulimia. Unless they get help and support in dealing with their emotional reactions to their problems. According to research studies, family conflict together with other problems, as well as emotional and/or physical abuse, with neglect during childhood, can set the stage for potential eating disorders. For many young girls and ladies, their response to family problems during childhood years, not the family problems themselves, seems to have a strong connection to the development of eating disorders. If a girl has been experiencing family problems that lead to physical and/or emotional abuse and neglect, she would grow up without any emotional support coming from them, a factor that is so important for a young woman’s well-being.
Nightmares
Nightmares are the type of dream everyone fears and wants to avoid. By their nature, these dreams are fearful, but often they need to be faced. The mind may be presenting them to us in such a dramatic manner because we have ignored a message for a prolonged period of time and its resorting to more drastic means to get our attention.
The truth is, many nightmares are actually gifts that we should be thankful for because they are trying to help us.
Avoidance is the wrong response. The strong emotions evoked by these intense dreams are cries for help, and like a baby crying in the night for attention they will not be denied. The longer you ignore them, the louder they will get! Therefore ignoring nightmares is not only the wrong response, its impractical in that it will make them worse.
Sometimes the subconscious mind will work with your nightmares to bring resolutions without you being consciously aware of the entire process. But when nightmares become recurring, then its a sign that your conscious attention is being sought.
Its more common to wake up in the middle of a nightmare than during a regular dream. Its also more common to remember a nightmare. This is, again, by design as a way of trying to get your attention.
The best way to get rid of a recurring nightmare is to deal with it that is to deal with the issue its presenting. It will take some courage, but here are some tips on how to do it:
Rather than turning and shooting a monster or bad guy that is chasing you, its better to turn and ask the aggressor how you can help it. Use such questions as What is it you want to tell me, or How can I help you help me?
Come up with solutions by asking other cast members in the dream what resolution they would like to see.
Bring your Spiritual Guide into the dream and ask for his/her suggestions.
Nightmares may also be caused by trauma, psychiatric problems or drugs (both legal and illegal). In such cases the care of a health care professional should be sought immediately.
I Am Woman, Hear Me Set Off The Airport Security Metal Detector
Copyright 2006 Mary Foley
As I write this I’m sitting in Dulles International Airport waiting for a flight that departs so early it should be illegal. At least it’s a cheap ticket. And even though I’ve only had three hours of sleep I was amused when the security guard surprisingly said “No beep?!” after I walked through the metal detector. Kinda sounded like an airport security pick-up line. This time I got off lucky with no additional wand scan or bag check. That’s not always the case, and when I’m “wanded” there’s always one article of clothing that sets off the monitor and declares “I am woman!” – my underwire bra.
Increased airport security has stirred some of my female friends to take action. One gal pal is purposely buying a bra without underwire. Another is ready to offer her design ideas to Victoria’s Secret for another type of Miracle Bra – one without metal hooks. For some women it’s a practical matter of getting through security as fast as possible. But, for others it’s a matter of not being embarrassed by drawing attention to the fact that they have breasts, breasts that often need help to stay put and to postpone the effects of gravity.
Bras are considered a necessary item for women, at least for the last 100 years or so. And remember, good girls demonstrate modesty; they would never NOT wear a bra!
Actually, I don’t think it’s really about modesty, particularly since I’m no longer 13. I think it’s about being embarrassed that you’re a woman, that you’ve got body parts that are attractive to about 50% of the population, and that it’s your fault you can’t better manage those parts so you’re not setting off metal detectors. Follow that line of thinking and pretty soon you feel bad for taking up space, ta-tas and all.
This is one time I’m glad the term bodacious is sometimes associated with ta-tas. Bodacious Women know they have breasts and aren’t ashamed. They may wear form-fitting clothing or they may not. They may feel sexy some days because of their breasts or they may find them inconvenient protrusions. No matter the choice, their attitude is the same: no apologies for being a woman.
Growing up a tomboy, I had an adversarial relationship with my chest. Basically, I didn’t want one. Breasts didn’t help with sports and they made it all too clear to the world that I would no longer be mistaken as Daddy’s “little fella.” The last ten years I’ve grown to like the fact that I’m female and that includes breasts. I also dont take them for granted as I know there’s a one in four chance of losing one or both to breast cancer. So, while I have them I’ll wear the bra of my choice, or none at all. Hmmmperhaps that’s what was behind the security guard’s remarks. Well, for him it will remain a mystery. For me, I’m glad to be a woman knowing I have bra-related and other choices. And, that’s bodacious!
Major League Baseball – Pitchers You Can Bet On
Its the start of the MLB season and already some pitchers have come to the forefront. Who looks good and has the support to win a slew of games? You may want to wager on these guys all season long. However, before you decide to drop some money on any pitcher, youll need to consider some variables other than that particular hurlers stats.
In putting together this list of four pitchers who have a strong chance of winning every time they take the mound, consideration has been given to each hurlers earned run average, his clubs ability to generate runs and the teams bullpen situation. Additionally, the age of the player, physical condition and health and past history have been weighed.
For our purposes, we are only interested in betting the money line. The reason for this is that the money line is a straight bet which does not take into consideration the +/- 1 and1/2 run game spread that the run line does. Betting the run line complicates the attempt to determine a pitchers worth in a game, since topnotch mound dwellers are capable of winning many one run games over the course of a season. This is especially true when the team has a great closer.
Pitchers backed by top closers may not beat the spread, which makes wagering on the run line extremely risky. Since our point is to determine what pitchers have the best chance of winning whenever they go to the mound and since strong pitching tends to defeat great hitting, we want to bet the game in its purest form – the money line.
Jose Contreras (Chicago White Sox)
Contreras starts his fourth Major League season and is coming off his best year ever, where he went 15-7 with a 3.61 ERA for the world champion White Sox. This season the thirty-four year-old right-hander is off to the best start of his career, going 3-0 with a 1.55 ERA. Batters from the left side of the plate are hitting .229 against him, while those from the right are hitting .167. In 4 starts, hes given up only 19 hits, which makes him one of the toughest pitchers in the league.
He has three strong pitches – 91- 95 mph fastball, a slider/cut fastball, and an elusive forkball. Contreras had always been seen as having great potential but his mental make-up seemed to get in the way. That particular problem disappeared last year when, after the All Star break, he became unbeatable. In September he went 6-0 with a 1.99 ERA, and during the entire second-half, he was 11-2 notching a 2.96 ERA. He also had a great post season.
The question for this year was would the post-All Star break Contreras show up or the pre-All Star break pitcher (4-5, 4.26 ERA) from last season take the mound? It looks like the new, confident Contreras is present, as the righty continues from where he left off in the World Series.
The White Sox are scoring 5.9 runs per game and closer Bobby Jenks, who has given up 2 homers in 9 innings, is 6 for 6 in save opportunities. The home runs might be worrisome, except for the fact that they did not affect a save opportunity and Jenks has a 90-100 mph fastball that more times than not simply mows down hitters.
On many other teams, Contreras would be a number one starter. With such an all-around tough starting pitching staff surrounding him, plenty of offense, and a great bullpen, Contreras appears to be in a comfort zone that will simply give him more and more confidence. Hes a great bet.
Greg Maddux (Chicago Cubs)
Maddux has started his twenty-first MLB season in amazing fashion with a 4-0 record and a 0.99 ERA. Coming into this year, there was concern over the aging pitcher due to the fact that he had a losing record in 2005 (13-15, 4.24 ERA). The last time Maddux had lost more games than he won was in 1987.
Last season, Maddux seemed to lose some of his great stuff. Hes always had fantastic location and movement, while ably working both sides of the plate. His 82-87 mph fastball has late movement that handcuffs hitters. His three other pitches include a tight curve at 73-75 mph, a tricky slider ranging from 80-84 mph, and a circle change. He usually walks an average of 1 man or less per game.
Backing up Maddux is closer Ryan Dempster, who last season saved 33 games in 35 opportunities. Its now been two years since Dempster, a former starter who the Cubs converted to a closer in 2004, had elbow surgery. Last seasons strong performance gave credence to his recovery. This season hes sporting a 1.50 ERA while being a perfect 6 for 6 in saves.
The Cubs offense has scored an average of 5.05 runs per game, which is plenty the way that Maddux and Dempster have been pitching. However, to continue in the impressive manner in which hes started, Maddux must have pinpoint control.
Despite his losing season in 2005, Maddux started 35 games and pitched 225 innings. His health is not a concern. Although entering his third decade as a major league pitcher, hes still a workhorse who wins with finesse and intelligence. Those two attributes make him a good bet.
Curt Schilling (Boston Red Sox)
In 2004, Curt Schilling came to Boston and helped the Red Sox do something they had not done since 1918 – win the World Series. Schilling, perhaps baseballs ultimate competitor, did something during the famous playoff series with the Yankees that no one else had ever done before; he had a tendon that was interrupting his delivery sewn in place.
That operation could have ended his career, and in 2005 it did look like he might be done with baseball. Now, in 2006, he is back – stronger, dominant, in total command and as competitive as ever.
The veteran pitcher is 4-0 with a 2.60 ERA and 31 SO in 34.2 innings. This is the best start of his 20-year career.
In the role of closer, John Papelbon has been stellar, going 9 for 9 with an ERA of 0.00. In 12.1 innings, hes struck out 10, while walking two, hitting one batsman and allowing 6 hits. In this young season, Papelbon, a rookie, is the best closer in the majors.
Boston is in the bottom third of hitting in the majors, which is certainly not good news for Schilling or the rest of the pitching staff. But they are expected to do better.
In a way, a competitor like Schilling who has the support of a young closer like Papelbon doesnt need a whole lot of run support. The starter is meticulous in his record keeping on hitters and teams, and his game prep is flawless. Hes one of the most disciplined players in the game and when he goes out to pitch, he takes the mound prepared to carry the team on that particular day.
In 2004, Schilling won 21 games while losing 6. If he can stay healthy, he should easily match that mark. Roy Oswalt (Houston Astros)
In four of his first five seasons with the Astros, right-handed pitcher Roy Oswalt has proven to be one of the best in the league. In both 2004 and 2005, he had 20 wins while throwing more than 230 innings in each year. During his career, hes given up an average of only16 homeruns per season.
After missing part of the season in 2003 due to injury, he came back strong in 2004, recording 206 strikeouts and a 20-10 mark. In five games this year, hes 4-0 with a 2.48 ERA and 23 strikeouts.
Oswalt works fast and commands his 92-96 mph fastball with aplomb. His curve, which tumbles in at around 70 mph, has a big arc with tight downward spin. Hitters have a tough time reading it and when they finally do, its usually too late. For variety, he also has a straight changeup.
The Astros are third in the league in RBI and second in batting average, which means this consistent and reliable pitcher should enjoy good run support.
During his fairly short career, fastball throwing closer Brad Lidge has been very good. Last season he earned 42 saves in 46 opportunities and the year before he was 29 for 33.
However, there is some concern with Lidge this season. He is 7 for 9 in save opportunities, giving up nine runs and 3 homeruns over 11.2 innings. His two blown saves were opportunities 8 and 9. It was during the last two save attempts that he gave up the majority of his runs, while having trouble with his control.
Oswalt has had a tendency over the years to win twice as many games as he loses, making him a very good bet. This even occurred during his injury-shortened season. Hes one of the best in the majors. Despite Lidges uneven performance in the closing role, Oswalts consistency and command make him a sound bet.
The four starters weve examined all have the potential to win 20 games this year. Before placing your wagers, you should review current stats on these starting pitchers, the bullpen staff, and the teams recent offensive output. Also take a close look at the teams opponent, gauging how they are hitting, their starter, and the ability of the club to score runs, mount comebacks, and win close games.
The best pitchers will usually get a decision in 25-30 of their starts, winning from 18-23 of those starts and losing about 8 to 14. However, remember that you are betting on a particular team and as long as the listed starters begin the game, there will be action. It doesnt matter if that starter wins; it matters if the team wins.
Out of a top pitchers approximately 35 starts, he will win somewhere around 20. That leaves them and you with 15 losses. if youre a little lucky and able to analyze the situation, youll end up +5 in terms of wins vs. losses. If you can finish at +5 on these four pitchers by the end of the 162-game season, youll be sitting pretty. But remember, there are no guarantees in sports or sports betting.

Shopping for a Mattress? Get In the NOW!
It still amazes me to see that in almost every walk of life, consumers are looking for the latest and greatest on the market. Except when shopping for a mattress, it still seems that people are drawn to the ‘same old same old’ one mattress fits all coils and springs. Ouch! But that’s not the big kicker; the big deal comes when you actually price these mattresses. To get a top quality coils and springs mattress you have to pay between $1500US -$3000US to get the comfort levels you want and then you are still really buying an expensive foundation with a memory foam pillow top, which is what is providing the comfort you feel. So, let’s say you spend $2000US, you now own a 100lb wooden box filled with coils and springs and what sold you was the $200US pillow top.
So why not just take the time to really see what options are out there? You will find so many other choices that take advantage of our newest technology, are not only half the price but provide a much healthier environment for you to sleep. All the new types of mattresses and beds are specifically designed sleep systems that provide the right support to minimize pressure to acceptable levels for different body types and sleeping postures, maintaining back and spine alignment. The coils and springs mattresses can only say this when they come with the memory foam pillow top. The coils and springs can’t really “fill in the gaps” to support the parts of your body that do not sink into the coils, such as your lower back.
Coils and springs mattresses’ biggest claim to fame is that the coils work independently so when you move, your partner doesn’t. Great, but how much does that matter if you’re not comfortable and you wake up tired and stiff? And in all honesty, I don’t know anyone who actually “bowls” in bed.
So what are the options out there? There are four different types of new technology sleep systems that really are a great bang for the buck and are very affordable and provide many health and convenient benefits compared to coils and springs.
1) Air Mattress Beds – Air Mattress Beds cradle and cushion your body, providing more even weight distribution without the poking and prodding possible from a standard coil spring mattress. Easy to use handheld controls and a state of the art ultra-quiet air inflation system allow each sleeper to quickly adjust the firmness of their side of the air bed to the perfect comfort level, with just the touch of a button. Imagine, now couples can individually adjust each side of the air bed to the exact firmness and comfort level each partner prefers. (Tip: Look for horizontal baffling and contoured foam edges for quality construction.)
2) Adjustable Beds – Now any sincere mattress salesman won’t push the watching TV or reading in bed, it’s not something that we should recommend. But with today’s lifestyles this has become a normal way of life for some people. So if that’s the case then you really should think about doing it right! With the touch of a button, adjustable beds move into hundreds of relaxing positions. All without creating pressure, stress or strain on your body. Touch a button again and experience a new concept in comfort, while your own personal massage system helps to relieve tired, sore muscles, and reduce everyday tension and fatigue. Encourage restful sleep through relaxation. (Tip: Concentrate on the frame construction, don’t fall for the “mattress included” it’s rarely of any quality.)
3) Latex Beds – Latex mattresses provide the most comfortable sleep surface in the world. Already immensely popular in Europe, Latex Mattresses are beginning to boom here in the United States. More and more Americans are learning about the tremendous advantages of Latex Mattresses everyday. The Talalay Process produces the highest quality, most resilient and consistent latex foam in the industry. Its consistent cell structure and exact density result in the most even firmness and feel possible. You can also buy Natural latex products. (Tip: Look for US made foam with layered construction, as this gives you quality foam and creates a variety of comfort levels to choose from.)
4) Memory Foam Beds – Well I think the word is out on this one, I’m sure you’ve heard all the NASA explanations of why this is used in the Space Shuttle and seen the “handprint” pictures. But, in case you haven’t, Visco Elastic Memory Foam Mattresses utilize amazing, space age and NASA developed Visco Elastic Memory Foam. Visco Elastic Memory Foam is temperature sensitive. It actually reacts to the heat produced by your body, conforming to your body in a way no other material can. Where your body is making the most contact with the memory foam, the foam reacts and becomes softer. Where your body is making less contact, the foam stays cooler and remains more firm. The result is pressure being evenly distributed throughout the sleeper’s body, leading to fewer pressure points and a more restorative sleep. (Tip: Again, look out for problem European foam; US made Sensus with layered construction for the same quality and comfort level benefits.)
All of these new age sleep systems can be purchased for a fraction of what a coils and springs mattress goes for and depending on the mattress, you can adjust the foam layers to personalize your comfort level as you please. And don’t forget about the many major sleep benefits from all the sleep system technology. You just can’t miss, if you have to purchase a mattress or sleep system, you owe it to yourself to check these out, not only for your health but for your pocketbook too, ouch again!
Tune in to my next articles where I’ll break down what to look for in each of the new age sleep systems.
Boxing Notebook: Corrales-Castillo III Should Be Mucho Macho!
Code Red! Code Red!
Saturday is the final clash between Diego Chico Corrales (40-3, 33 KOs) and Jose Luis Castillo (54-7-1, 47 KOs) for the lightweight championship of the world. Though 70 pounds south, theyre true heavyweights. Sportsbook odds are Castillo -220, Corrales +180 – based on what?
Tale of the tape: Corrales, 28, is a lightweight freak, 5-11 with a half-inch fist, forearm and thigh advantage over the 5-8, 32-year-old Castillo plus a one inch bigger expanded chest, reach, bicep and calf. Castillo needs a ladder to reach him (on paper).
Corrales has had great success against smaller, aggressive guys. Castillo is strong enough mentally and big enough physically (He demonstrated that last time with Chico) to mete out plenty of pain of his own.
But the physical discrepancies dont apply here. Chico doesnt fight tall. He likes to walk in and unload hooks and rights bang on the inside, fight short. He likes it physical.
Reviewing their first bout, I was amazed at Corrales success when he made space. When he pushed off on Castillo and attacked from the outside, he was effective dropping right hands and short hooks. He used the jab to control the pace – Castillo had no answers. So, why doesnt he stick with it? Hes like the guy that threw himself on cactus and when asked why said: It seemed like a good idea at the time.”
Think back to Corrales-Casamayor II. Stick and move. Outbox the guy. Corrales’ trainer, Joe Goossen, should put it in letters of fire on a ringside billboard. Also, Castillo is prone to cuts. Spear him with the jab; open the scar tissue. Double-jab right over the top, keep moving. Do that all night, and Corrales gets the W. But, it isnt a safe bet.
Chin Check: Corrales is no stranger to the canvas.
Floyd Mayweather dropped him five times one night. Castillo and Joel Casamayor scored five knockdowns and one knockout against him. You can develop muscles, strengthen your mind, but you cant train a chin. Plus, Castillo has found something with that short left hook.
In a recent FHM interview, Corrales analyzed the punch:
I got a left hook in that second fight and that was purely my mistake. I caught him with my right hand, and he was ready for it. I felt him pulling himself down and really losing some steam. I need to make sure my hand is at home and never cocked.
You can read the full interview here: http://www.fhmus.com/articles-1267.asp?cnl_id=5&stn_id=46&idx_id=1267
These guys bristle with macho. Expect the first few rounds to be more controlled: Corrales moving and setting the pace. Once Castillo breaks through, its MACHO TIME. Ill agree with the sportsbook odds – if Corrales chin holds up, hell land enough punches to eke out a split decision.
Jhonny Gonzalez-Fernando Montiel: Is it over yet?
Who made this fight? Was this a Barrera concoction? Maybe law school has him out of touch. Being Guatemalan, I can relate to the poor souls who were expecting a slugfest and got a snoozefest.
Look, when you match Mexicans, you dont expect Leonard vs. Benitez. To Latinos boxing equals fighting.Hit and get hit. We dont want a ballet. After a 12-hour shift, getting a crap paycheck, my wife yelling at me and my car breaking down all I want to do Fridays is hang with the boys, suck down some Coronas and watch two guys trying to kill each other cause they’re pissed.
How about an Im sorry bout? Daniel Ponce De Leon was on the same card, and he scored another KO. Doesnt a guy with a 90 percent KO ratio deserve to be on TV?
Joe Rein describes De Leons style: “Hes a clenched fist, sparring – an impatient 5-5 southpaw he brings it! -with little give in his legs over-wide stance – and constant I-want-to-kill-you lead lefts, making his handlers cringe. But he shrinks from no exchange – head down, squared-up, furiously winging to knock down a building. None of it by design, more a random act of violence.
Many of his free swings are blocked or parried, but when his sparmate steps back, thinking hes out of range, Ponce brings new meaning to “reach out and touch someone” with a wingspan just shy of Marcianos. The shudder when he lands makes it clear why hes dangerous.
Read more about De Leon here: http://www.thesweetscience.com/boxing-article/3849/are-you-making-any-money/ . Next time a fight sucks, HBO should sneak in a bonus bout. Who cares which, as long as its brutal.
Last Round
Chad Dawson should look awesome against Eric Harding in his first light heavyweight go.Hardings not lacking confidence:
I am willing to fight for winner-takes-all, he said. Dawson has made a big mistake. This is like a man against a young kid. He better be ready. Every fight is a must-win for me.
Harding outpointed Antonio Tarver in a WBC eliminator on June 23, 2000. He also fought ex-world champs Montell Griffin and Glen Johnson. Harding, the WBC No. 10/IBF No. 9 contender won USBA and NABF 175-pound crowns in his past two starts, 12-round decisions over David Telesco and Daniel Judah.
Dawson, the WBC No. 7/WBA No. 15 contender, said, I am looking forward to this. It is a great fight for ShoBox. I am a still an improving, young fighter who is stepping up in competition. Harding is a great fighter. He has a good resume, but I definitely think I am the stronger fighter. I am in great shape. The world will know my name when I walk out of the ring with a victory.
Dawson knows how to deal with awkward fighters. I was at Dawsons bout against Ian Gardner in New Haven, Conn. with TN promoter Jake Donovan, who commented about the fight:
The first few rounds were typical of a Gardner fight, even if the southpaw wasnt in complete control. Dawson carried the action, but Gardners awkward style caused him to miss nearly everything. Action was so dismal, that many in press row were more interested in the war of words between the two camps at ringside.By round five, Dawson took over for good. Gardner offered an occasional straight left, but seemed more concerned with a shot that caught him above the bridge of his nose. By rounds end, Gardner was slow to walk back to his corner, grabbing his head, as if something was amiss.
Chad Dawson was amiss. The guys the goods.

WBA welterweight champion Ricky Hatton will sit ringside in Las Vegas on Saturday for Castillo-Corrales III, intending to challenge the victor of this epic trilogy, says his dad, manager Ray Hatton.
“He’d like to fight the winner, although we have heard rumors that Castillo will jump right up to welter afterwards and possibly fight Miguel Cotto.”
Im skeptical of a Cotto-Castillo bout coming off. On June 10, Paul Malignaggi has his own plans.

This is a brief overview of some of the methods and products that arthritis sufferers can use to alleviate many of the symptoms associated with arthritis, especially joint pain.
Eat Your Carbs, They’re Good For You!
You may think after all of the talk lately about carb reduction that you need to avoid eating carbohydrates. But the exact opposite is the case. The kinds of carbohydrates you get from fruits and vegetables are a necessary basis of your daily diet. Instead of helping you pack on the pounds, they actually help you to burn fat. They are also a major source of fuel for your body, especially your muscles, brain and nervous system.
Carbs occur in two types: simple and complex. They are broken down into glucose, or blood sugar, which is metabolized by your body for energy. Glucose not immediately used by you is stored in your muscles as glycogen, but if your body has an excess of glycogen, it is converted into fat. However, because carbs prime your metabolism, you need them in order to burn fat. This is one of the major reasons you must not starve yourself and eat too few carbs. You must eat a good intake of complex carbs, such as those found in fruits and veggies.
Simple carbs, such as those found in candies and sweets, and also fruit, are turned into glucose quickly. These are the kind which can add to your weight problem. Complex carbs, such as those found in brown rice, veggies, legumes (peas, beans and lentils), and whole grains breads and cereals are digested and thus used at a much slower rate, giving your body time to prime its metabolism.
There are four calories in each and every gram of carbohydrate. Nutritionists say that 50% of your diet should consist of complex carbs. Simple carbs are high in calories but low in vitamins and minerals. These are the so-called empty calories that you find in sodas, deserts and other such sweets, and to some extent in fruits — especially fruit juices and fruit juice drinks. You should be getting your major carb intake from whole fruits, whole grains and vegetables.
Good high carb veggies are peas, peppers, pumpkin, radishes, spinach, squash, succotash, sweet potatoes, tomatoes and turnips. Succotash, sweet potatoes and green cooked peas are the highest in carbs. You need several servings per day of complex carb foods such as these to maintain your energy levels and keep you from getting those sluggish feelings that make you feel sick and tired.
By eating five or more servings of fruits and vegetables every day, you will be boosting your health through better carb consumption. The National Cancer Institute recommends that you have fruit juice — or better yet fresh fruit every day for breakfast. You should have a fresh fruit or vegetable snack every day. You need to stock up on dried, frozen and canned fruits and veggies. You must make these foods visible and easy to access throughout your daily routine. And you have to sample the delicious spectrum when it comes to the many different colors and varieties of fruits and vegetables.
You will get your five a day if you eat one cup of dark, leafy greens, one half cup of red tomatoes, one half cup of yellow peppers, six ounces of orange juice and one half cup of blueberries. This is only one example of how you can consume five a day of fruits and vegetables to keep your complex carb ratio up. Please notice this includes only one serving of fruit juice. Various nutrition experts state that you should eat whole, fresh fruits more often than drinking fruit juice, which keeps those simple sugars from adding to your weight problem.
This is because simple sugars are more concentrated in fruit juices than in whole fruits. You should eat at least two cups of fruit a day, in a variety of fresh choices, such as one small banana, one large orange and one quarter cup of fresh or canned apricots or peaches. Also, eating fresh fruit adds more fiber to your diet and helps flush toxins from your system better than only drinking fruit juice does.
You should also eat plenty of dark, leafy green veggies, which are among the best foods for you. Eat broccoli and kale, as well as mustard greens and spinach. Also, you should eat orange veggies such as carrots, sweet potatoes, pumpkin and winter squash. For peas and beans, among the best are pinto beans, kidney beans, black beans, garbanzo beans, split peas and lentils. Foods such as these are extremely healthy, low in fat, and terrific for raising your energy levels.
Eating fruits and veggies will also greater lower your risk for cancer. Researchers at the Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University have made top ten lists of the best antioxidant (anti-cancer) fruits and vegetables. Here are some of the most antioxidant members of the fruit and vegetable families of foods:
1) Fruits: prunes, raisins, blueberries, blackberries, strawberries, raspberries, plums, oranges, red grapes and cherries
2) Veggies: kale, spinach, Brussels sprouts, alfalfa sprouts, broccoli, beets, red bell peppers, onions, corn and eggplant
While the average American seldom gets as much as two servings of these good foods per day, nutrition experts say that five to seven servings a day need to become a staple of the ordinary American diet. You can easily sneak these into your familys eating patterns. Try serving raw veggies at every meal, and take advantage of packaged, prepared veggies. Put veggies into your breakfast and lunch, and start each family dinner with a mixed green salad. Serve a salad entre dish once per week, fill your spaghetti sauce with vegetables, and begin ordering a weekly pizza with an extra serving of healthy vegetables.
If we were to eat more veggies and fewer processed foods, we as a country would lose weight, clean out our clogged arteries, balance our blood sugar and shut down a large number of hospitals in the process. This would roughly solve Americas growing health and obesity problems in a nutshell.
