The British Royalty

Buckingham Palace has served as the official London residence of Britain’s sovereigns since 1837. It evolved from a town house that was owned from the beginning of the eighteenth century by the Dukes of Buckingham. Today it is The Queens official residence. Although in use for the many official events and receptions held by The Queen, areas of Buckingham Palace are opened to visitors on a regular basis.

Besides being the official London residence of The Queen, Buckingham Palace is also the busy administrative headquarters of the monarchy. The Palace is a working building and the centerpiece of Britains constitutional monarchy. It houses the offices of those who support the day-to-day activities and duties of The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh and their immediate family. The Palace is also the venue for great Royal ceremonies, State Visits and Investitures, all of which are organized by the Royal Household.

Although Buckingham Palace is furnished and decorated with priceless works of art that form part of the Royal collection, one of the major art collections in the world today, it is not an art gallery and nor is it a museum. Its State Rooms form the nucleus of the working Palace and are used regularly by The Queen and members of the Royal family for official and State entertaining. Buckingham Palace is one of the worlds most familiar buildings and more than 50,000 people visit the Palace each year as guests to banquets, lunches, dinners, receptions and the Royal Garden Parties.

Today the State Rooms are used extensively by The Queen and Members of the Royal Family to receive and entertain their guests on State, ceremonial and official occasions. During August and September when The Queen makes her annual visit to Scotland, the Palace’s nineteen state rooms are open to visitors.

As the Official Principal Residence of the British Monarch, in other words the London home of the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh. When Her Majesty is in residence her Royal Standard flies from the mast.

The State Rooms of the Palace are open to visitors during the Annual Summer Opening in August and September. They are lavishly furnished with some of the greatest treasures from the Royal Collection for example the paintings by Rembrandt, Rubens, Vermeer, Poussin, Canaletto and Claude, sculpture by Canova and Chantrey, exquisite examples of Svres porcelain, and some of the finest English and French furniture in the world.

The 18 rooms were first opened to visitors in 1993 to help raise funds to repair fire-damaged Windsor Castle. Using the public entrance in Ambassadors Court, visitors pass up the grand staircase and through magnificent state rooms, not entering the royal familys private apartments.

The Throne Room is illuminated by seven chandeliers, and here the Queen carries out formal ceremonial duties. The Green Drawing Room is the first room entered by guests at royal functions . The gold and white Music Room, with its original parquet floor, is used the presentation of State guests and royal christenings. By going down the Ministers Staircase, and through the Marble Hall, the Garden can be reached which is a haven in the heart of London. Only a 1,500 foot walk is open to the pubic, which goes around the lake, giving a rare view of the west front of the palace.

Down Under, the Weathers Fine!

For the traveler thats considering Sydney, one of the main attractions is the moderate weather. Unlike other cities that boast the same thing, Sydney truly delivers on the sunny skies and comfortable conditions.

With a location in a basin near the coast of the Pacific Ocean, Sydney also features the Blue Mountains (http://www.bluemts.com.au/) off to its west. As the largest natural harbor in the world, Sydney also claims over seventy beaches that can be enjoyed by tourists and native Australians. With a similar city size to London, Sydney officials have taken care to preserve a large part of the area within the city limits. The city of Sydney (http://www.cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au/) has two main regions: the Hornsby Plateau and the Cumberland Plain. The plateau is a distinct feature that is over six hundred feet in elevation and split by valleys of forests. On the other hand, the plain is a flat region that is west and south of the actual harbor. This geography plays a large role in how the actual climate is affected.

With the ocean coast, its no wonder that Sydney displays all of the signs of an oceanic climate. However, travelers will want to note that being in the south of the equator means that the seasons are reversed from those countries north of the equator. If youre looking for a warmer month, head out to Sydney in December, January, February or November.

The overall rain counts for Sydney’s average over the course of the year, with no real rainy season to speak of. The lowest number of rainy days is usually about nine or ten per month, while the highest number of days with rain in a month is generally thirteen. This makes for grand weather that is consistent and easy to plan vacations around.

The eastern winds that blow in during the first half of the year allow for slightly higher rainfalls during that time of year, but the difference is not overly noticeable. And dont worry; there isnt any snowfall to ruin any travel plans. The last snowfall recorded in Sydney was in the 1830s.

There have been periods of drought in Sydney due to the presence or absence of El Nino, but this is not as prevalent as it once was and the differences are minimal. Bushfires can be seen on one side of the city in these kinds of conditions. Weather patterns that involve cyclones or hail storms are rare and generally not something that needs to cause concern.

With the miles of sandy beaches in the Sydney area and the consistently beautiful weather, tourists and residents enjoy an extraordinary amount of fair weather, allowing for snorkeling, deep sea fishing, and other water sports in the harbor and out in the ocean.

If theres one thing that brings the people to Sydney, its the weather. There are few things to ruin your fun filled days, and even less things to worry you as you rest in the warm sun light.

Debt Consolidation Benefits and Drawbacks

Debt consolidation comes into play right after you realize that you are in an urgent need for money because you are deep in debt and interest rates, and the premiums you pay on your loans are no longer affordable. So in case you feel that your current loans are no longer manageable and can easily result in bankruptcy, it’s high time that you considered borrowing money for consolidating debts. At best, unpaid debts can have a strong impact on your credit history and result in poor credit report; and as a last resort, you can lose your property. However, it makes no difference how appealing debt consolidation loan can be, you should realize that this is nothing else but one more debt and if you obtain it unconsciously, it can lead you to even more serious financial problems such as bankruptcy.

At Last – Hands Free Kayaking Using Foot Pedals

Hobie Cat’s new Mirage kayak turns the kayaking world on its head with a system that keeps boaters’ hands free. The new technology is sure to change how people look at kayaking.

Hobie Cat is one of the world’s top kayak makers. The Hobie Mirage kayak is the only “hands-free” kayak ever made. Hobie Cat has completely changed kayaking and the pool of buyers for the sport.

The Mirage is the first kayak with a flipper system that has pedals and steering. Two removable flippers beneath the kayak move in opposite directions when boaters pedal, like a paddleboat but much faster. The kayak’s design lets it move easily and quickly. The flippers come off for travel. The system has a self-cleaning property to protect from the normal wear of kayak usage. The flippers adjust to the size of the boater and can be stowed so that they do not scrape in shallow areas.

The Hobie Cat Mirage is one of the best kayaks on the market. Take advantage of this innovative, versatile creation that anyone can use for almost any type of kayaking.

The flipper system gives you a whole-body workout. Your upper body can row while your lower body pedals. The system is a big help if you tire of rowing or need to get to your destination quickly.

Hobie Cat’s hands-free kayaks are the fastest line of kayaks ever made. The Mirage is perfect for everyone!

Vessia Ristorante makes you feel at home

The reasons we keep coming back to Vessia Ristorante in Irvine (in Orange County, Calif.) are pretty simple.

The food, the service, the room.

It’s a special place, but not in that big, showy, “special occasion” way. Vessia is casual charm, warm hospitality and reliably tasty servings.

We’ve shared many meals here over the past five years. When my wife and I moved back to Orange County in 2000, we spent our first New Year’s Eve with pasta and piped-in Italian music. Another night, we brought friends, and I devoured the serpintina alla Barese ($22.50) — thin, not- too-sweet sausage served with grilled polenta and spinach.

It seemed like the perfect place to celebrate my mother’s 80th birthday, so we reserved the attached patio. A dozen of us lingered over pastas, fresh coffee and a hazelnut cake. As a joke, I planted a tiara on my mother’s head. On the way out the door many hours later, our waiter, our busboy, manager Ismael Ayala and owner Franco Vessia formed a gauntlet of sorts, hugging her, kissing her hand, treating her like a queen.

We’ve come for more birthdays, for a get-out-of-the- house-the-day-after-Christmas dinner, and, as a special treat, I brought my mother in for lunch last month after a tough doctor’s appointment.

It was my first lunch there, and it confirmed what I’d read in almost every mention of Vessia: It’s a power-broker’s palace by day. By profession and hobby, Mom and I are eavesdroppers, so it was a treat to be seated among name- droppers going on about local and state politics.

Our spying ended when our lunches arrived. Mom had one of the specials, grigliata mista ($23.95). Generous portions of shrimp and chunks of fish lolled in a light wine and butter sauce, surrounded by spinach and artichokes. My salmon ($23.95) was grilled expertly with herbs and served with vegetables and potatoes. We could have opted for a less expensive lunch — a wide array of sandwiches ($9.95) and salads ($9.25) and pastas ($9.95) — but it was a special meal, after all.

By nightfall, it’s a family place.

The menu ranges from pizzas (from $11.50) to more sophisticated fish and meat specials (in the mid-$20s).

One recent night I met my wife and nearly 2-year-old son for dinner, but we were filled with a bit of trepidation.

Sure, Vessia is more casual than its white tablecloths would indicate. Still, a 2-year-old boy can test your definition of “casual.”

Not to worry, our waiter told my wife while she waited for me to arrive. “He’ll be fine; he can be himself.” As he was, with few ill effects.

Our meal wasn’t the best we’ve had here. My cuscinetto ($19.95) — skinless chicken breast rolled with prosciutto and asparagus stalks and topped with cheese — was dry, as if it had been prepared as a lunch special and sat all day. My wife’s fish special ($23.95) was grilled salmon, and it was fine, though the lemon-caper sauce was too tart.

One miss won’t stop us from coming back, and that’s where the rest of the mix comes in.

You can feel owner Franco Vessia’s hand — sometimes, quite literally — guiding you as you step in from the frenzy of a shopping-center parking lot. (The center is undergoing extensive renovations, and the road leading directly to the restaurant is temporarily closed.)

As you round the small lobby, traverse the snappy little bar and light into one of the earth-toned booths or tables, you look up to an open kitchen.

It’s contemporary, casual, comforting. A light aroma of roasting garlic flows into the room.

“I’ve tried to establish a neighborhood restaurant, a place where people feel comfortable,” Vessia said between the lunch and dinner rushes earlier this week.

“We tell our people to always recognize the regulars, and for people who aren’t regulars, treat them like they are, so they become one.”

He has a few tricks he’s picked up along a restaurateur route that began when he and his mother cooked at a small trattoria in a Chicago suburb. After it closed, he worked for Hyatt, which transferred him to Los Angeles in 1981. He did more time in corporate restaurants, at a Harry’s Bar, since closed, in Century City, before eventually moving to Irvine to open Prego.

After a dozen years, he jumped to open his own house in a spot where previous restaurants had mixed luck over the years.

He and chef Gino Buonanoce worked with Vessia’s mom to develop recipes to highlight Italy’s regional cuisines.

He joined the Chamber of Commerce and made friends among the politicians and the administrators at City Hall. He opened his bar on Mondays to let locals be “bartender for a night” — the little stories and photos on the Web site are a laugh.

He works the room.

“I know when people go out, they want to go to a place where they feel comfortable, like they’re a part of something,” he said.

Are You Stressed by Studying for Exams? Study More Efficiently!

Whether you are learning a new language or a subject like geography, these simple tips could save you hours of study time – and result in higher marks.

HIGHLIGHTING FUNDAMENTALS

You have probably used highlighters in textbooks and study notes; but are you getting the most out of them?

To learn anything, you must repeat the material. You go over it again – and again – and again. Then when you are confident that you have learned the information, you progress to more studying. However, this repetition process also means that you are wasting time going over facts and information you already know.

Don’t do it!

After you have learned about 80% of the material, use a yellow highlighter to mark everything that has eluded you. Next time through, concentrate on only the yellow areas. Try the memorization process a few more times until you have absorbed about 80% of the yellow text. Then do it again, marking over top of the yellow with a pink highlighter. This produces an orange shade. Spend more time memorizing everything with orange highlights.

This highlighting process produces three sections:

* Easy – no highlighting

* Moderately difficult – yellow highlighting

* Difficult – orange highlighting

The closer you get to an exam, the more time you should spend on the orange areas. They are your personal stumbling blocks. The 5%-10% of unknown material usually causes 95% or more of exam errors.

MAGNETISM – AND NOT THE PERSONAL KIND!

A magnetic metal clipboard can be a useful studying tool. If you don’t have one, you can use a small magnetic dry-erase board and a bulldog clip. You will also need a small refrigerator magnet (the flat business-card type that is distributed by dentists and plumbers).

Clip a page of study notes onto the board and use the fridge magnet to cover the answers. If the telephone rings or you are distracted by raiding the fridge for a snack, the magnet will keep track of your place on the page.

Experiment to see how many pages you can clip onto the board at one time before the magnet refuses to stick. You might be able to work with a pile of 5 or more sheets. Go through the first one, put it on the bottom of the pile, and proceed to the next.

After exams are finished, you can recycle photocopies or printouts by turning them over and using the other side of each page. You might even want to make your own notepads.

Carefully line up a stack of paper. Lay the stack on the edge of a table or desk and set a couple of heavy books on top. Use notepad glue or white glue to paint the ends. Once the glue dries, remove the books and separate the pile into manageable notepads.

Chess Over the Years

Over the years, chess spread throughout the world and enjoyed massive waves of popularity. Undoubtedly, reality is reflected in the idea that chess originated either as an aid or substitute for warfare. This stemmed from the notion that chess was invented as a war game and so, that is the manner in which it should executed. In fact in order to be knighted, it helped if you played a good game of chess.

And finally, a mention should be made of pawns; those so adequately named pieces which are even denied the status of chess ‘men’. Pawns were sacrificial pieces.

While chess might have originated as a war game, it was seen as a game of nobility and education in Europe in the 1500s. It can be seen that from actions in Europe around the year 1500 that chess had become strongly ingrained in western society. Within European Aristocracy, the concept behind chess became a royal court rather than a battlefield. However, the game’s popularity was helped by its social cache: a chess set was often associated with wealth, knowledge, and power. As a result it became fashionable for aristocrats to have live-in chess masters. In fact during difficult times in Protestant Europe there were massive attacks on “ungodly pursuits,” but chess was often defended while other pastimes were denied.

As a result chess has long been considered the ultimate test of intellectual activity. Some feel that because of its difficulty and boorishness, chess diminished in its traditional appeal. However, most will agree that the chess community has traditionally been more enlightened than the larger society.

Mass production of chess sets helped introduce chess to the lower class. The low cost to produce the Staunton set allowed the masses to purchase sets and helped to again popularize the game of chess. But chess is more than just a game of skill. Chess stood a turn in education as teachers noted that students’ behavior improved upon learning chess. How far beyond chess such aptitude can be expanded is the next big question.

One that is still argued today. Playing chess by computer began in the early 1950s, nearly as soon as computers became available. The rules of play early intrigued computer scientists-MIT wrote the first chess program in 1957. Some programmers believe that work on computer chess led to important software techniques still in use today. The worldwide fascination for chess has been astonishing. It has been said that there is more literature devoted to chess than for all other games combined. Today, chess is played world wide with international appeal.

Test Your Anxiety Response

Worries and anxieties are part of our life. The difference between us is our response to any event. The cause may be common, but the response may vary widely. Some anxiety and worry is good. Otherwise we cannot save ourselves. Fear is one of our defense mechanisms. It is fear of death that stops us walking on a highway. Fear, worry and anxiety are related. Let us examine and quiz ourselves about our anxiety response. Too much anxiety can stop us from working. How to quiz ourselves about our anxiety response? Let us find out.

We are said to feel anxiety when we are apprehensive about future and fear what may happen. All of us experience lot of anxiety when we are to go for a surgery. Such events create maximum anxiety. Should every situation make us feel anxious? The answer is no. Are you an anxious person? Do you experience more anxiety then your friends in the same situation? If yes, it is time that you rethink about yourself.

Quiz yourself about anxiety. For example, you may to get up early than usual and reach for a very important appointment or work. Few of us will have no anxiety about that, but some of us will not be able to fall asleep because of anxiety. They are worried that they may not get up early and not reach in time. This anxiety causes more damage than benefiting us. Such common anxiety must be eliminated. Quiz yourself about different situations and compare your anxiety response with others. If you are responding with higher level of anxiety, reduce it with conscious effort.

Love Your Body, Forgive Your “Self”

This may sound a bit odd coming from me, but I believe that regardless of what you eat – how many times each week you exercise or what particular diet you decide to try – if you do not have your inner life in order, it will be difficult to be at peace with yourself and your body.

In discussing ways to love your body, therefore, it is important to look at ways we can have peace with ourselves. Moreover, in this article, we will discuss an idea you may not have considered: forgiveness.

The Past Is The Past, Let It Go:

The most important process we can undertake for our health and well being is to make a conscious effort not to leave negative energy embedded in the past. In effort to move into present time, and be at one with our own body, it becomes essential to let go of all the hurts and struggles that have led us to this moment. There is only one road to this state of oneness, however: The act of letting go.

As it turns out, I’m not the only one who stands by the belief system of releasing the past in effort to improve the health of our minds, as well as our body and spirit. Carolyn Myss in her healing lecture series: Why People Don’t Heal, makes the claim that forgiveness is the #1 way to move forward in health. And she can back it up. She has used the healing process of letting go to transform people from near death to glowing health. With this in mind then, ask yourself: Is there anyone or anything from my past which prevents me from moving forward? Said differently: is there something in your past that’s holding you back?

Learn To Forgive Others, The Process:

This brings us to the next step in our progress of releasing the past: learning to forgive others. Keep in mind, most often others say and do things as a result of how they are feeling about themselves. In most cases, whether they are aware of it or not, unhealthy individuals inflict their wounds upon us to salve their own pain. This can no longer affect us if we make a full effort to do as Don Miguel Ruiz says in his book The Four Agreements, and “not take things personally.” When we do take things personally, we really could gather up a lifetime of emotional baggage.

As it pertains to body image and self-esteem, however, is there anyone you need to forgive? Has someone knowingly or unknowingly inflicted a negative body view onto you? Here’s my personal example: When I was in high school, I had a “friend” who was popular, pretty and blonde. As an introvert and troubled youth, I took everything most personally. Imagine my emotional baggage when any time I would so much as mention my interest in a particular boy, she’d make sure she would go out of her way to get his interest.

Needless to say our friendship wasn’t long term. And later I learned she was living in an unstable home. Yet, when I was younger, her actions just plain hurt my feelings and gave me a negative self image. Now I realize my insecurities at the time were my wounds to heal, and once I’d forgiven her and not taken her actions personally, I could move forward without holding on to past insecurity.

Learn To Live In the Present, An Exercise:

When we can learn to let go of the past and live fully in the present, we are also growing. After all, how could we grow if we have negative energy lodged in the past? Moreover, there are many other active ways to learn to live in the present. Begin the process by taking a current inventory of your body. I like to do this by using my journal (you do have a journal, don’t you?)

Here’s how it works:

Take a scan of your body. First take body part by body part and make a note of what you are happy about. Ask yourself: What do I love about me? At first this may seem awkward, but I cannot stress the importance of taking time to spend time with your self and learning to know “you.”

After you’ve noted all the positive aspects of your self, make note of those parts you’d like to change. Keep in mind your boundaries – are these changes within your control? If so, make notes to yourself as to how you may go about making a change for the better. If changes are out of your control – take time every day to consciously send love to those parts of your body. When ever possible, tell your mind that you accept your body and your self for who you are, right now.

When you’ve finished, take a look at your list. What can you do right now that would make you love a part of yourself? Consider this your permission slip: Today take time to do something good for yourself. Better yet, walk to the phone right now and make an appointment to do something for your self. My favorite self-love activities? Here’s a couple suggestions. Ladies: A manicure or pedicure? Gentlemen: A massage?

Today, take time to focus on all of your positive qualities. Make an effort to forgive the past and move into the present moment. Prepare to grow!

Whats Hot About Cool Touch Laminators

Laminators are not longer just being used in large office buildings or printing plants. Today many people are opting for a home laminator that preserves and protects a wide range of important paper products. Schools have also gotten in the laminating swing of things by creating colourful and lasting memories of the childrens projects, self-made books and other artwork. Take a look at some of the many uses for laminators.

Where to Use a Desk Top Laminator

Desk top laminators are a popular addition to home offices because of their many uses. They generally take sheets of laminating film and can laminate projects as large as 9 x 12. Some home laminator models are cool touch on the outside so they are safe even for children to use themselves. The finished project comes through the system cool as well so little hands can handle them right away.

Heres a list of some popular items to laminate at home:

1. Recipe cards
2. IDs and Social Security Cards
3. Important documents such as birth certificates and marriage licenses.
4. Book marks
5. Childrens flash cards and study aids
6. Family chore charts
7.
Childrens homemade placemats
8. Photographs
9.
A babysitters contact and checklist
10. Papers with poems, quotes, or lists of any kind.

There are also many home business applications for a desktop laminator. You can laminate business cards or phone lists. If you use supplies in your business an inventory reorder list or documentation for procedures can be preserved month after month.

Industrial Sized Laminators

The larger, industrial laminating machines are able to take large rolls of laminating film which allows you to laminate continuously with foot after foot of durable plastic. The extra wide width also accommodates extra large projects. Many businesses such as printers will laminate printed materials for their customers on these machines. Some examples are menus, book covers or charts. These laminators use high heat for a lasting seal.

Making Efficient Use of Your Laminator

If you are still questioning whether or not you would actually use a laminator, remember that smaller projects can be lumped together to save time and money.

If you have several small photos, for example, that you want to laminate, you can place as many as will fit on a 9 x 12 sheet together and send them on one pass through the laminating machine. Just be sure to leave enough space between each item and the edge of the sheet for a good, strong seal of film to film.

When trimming your laminated project, leave between 1/8 and along the edge so the seal remains in tact. This will keep the project securely protected day after day.

Remember when purchasing a laminator to choose a size a bit bigger than the largest project you currently think you will need it for. You can always group items, but you cant get anything bigger through the machine. It is limited by the feed width and size of the laminating film.

Walk Your Way To Better Health

There’s a workout that you do every day, even if you don’t know it. Of all the ways to stay fit, walking is the easiest, safest and cheapest. If you’ve been walking most of your life, you may be an expert at it already. It’s a natural movement-no fighting the way your body was designed to move-and there’s almost no risk of injury. You can start with little more than a good pair of walking shoes. Best of all, it’s an activity you can enjoy either by yourself or together with friends and family.

Walk expert Leslie Sansone has been putting a bounce in people’s steps for the past 25 years. With her energy and enthusiasm, Leslie teaches people of all ages and shapes how to get fit, stay fit and feel better about life, simply by walking. Her In-Home Walking workout is a system of walking that can be done in the comfort of your own home. It’s all in the newest DVD in her “Walk At Home With Leslie Sansone” series, “Advanced 5-Mile Walk.”

A one-mile brisk walk burns almost as many calories as a one-mile run. Even a moderately paced stroll has health benefits. In fact, according to a recent Harvard University study, walking as little as an hour a week, at any pace, reduces the risk of coronary artery disease. Longer and more vigorous walking produced a greater risk reduction. Here are some tips to get the most out of your walks:

• Walk whenever you can. Park a little further away than usual, or if you use public transportation, consider getting off a stop earlier or later than you normally would. If you’re only traveling a short distance, consider walking the entire way. Where possible, use the stairs rather than the elevator or escalator.

• Make topography your friend. Walking uphill burns more calories than flat ground and helps build strength and stamina. Surprisingly, walking downhill can be harder on your body than going up, so slow down and keep your knees bent.

• Hand weights, up to 10 percent of your total weight, can help you reach your exercise goal.

• Try a walking workout in your own home. You don’t need a treadmill-any space in your home where you can take just a few steps can be as good as a track. Simply find walking programs that are easy to follow, can be performed in a small space and do not require expensive equipment, and you’re off.

The Fear Of Criticism

So many times in life we would like to try something new. Like a new sport, different style haircut, changing clothing or loosing weight. But are afraid to try because of the criticism we might receive from others because of our change. Over time we have been brainwashed into believing other people’s opinions and think they hold more weight then our own feelings. We don not want to be judged. If you want to break old habits you must not be controlled by outside people. You must have inner control.

This is your life!

There is nothing wrong with a little criticism. You just have to be able to decipher between the truths. Listen for it. Ask yourself if there is any truth to what someone is saying. Do they know what they are talking about? If you feel they are after careful consideration then use their feedback to improve. If your intuition tells you they are full of it then disregard it! Be true to your self and only accept opinions that hold truths!

Don’t be afraid to have criticisms of your self. But make sure they are your own opinions and not someone elses. If you don not like something about yourself then change it. Always look to improve.

Sometimes our own criticisms are tainted. This goes back to being brainwashed. Others have fed us information over the years that might have be tainted and have altered our thoughts over the years. Since we were not trying to decipher between the truth, our thoughts have turned into a messy desk where you can not find the paper you want. It is time to clean up the mess of criticism and restructure. This is the only way you will be able to change you habits and better your life.

World Series In Russia Huh? What?

As we watch the Astros choke or White Sox perform valiantly depending on your point of view, I am reminded of my baseball experience in Russia.

World Series

I always find it interesting that most of our professional sports call the championship round the World Series or some similar variation. Clearly, there are games being played elsewhere, so how can it be the world championship? With baseball, the arrivals of Ichiro Suzuki of the Seattle Mariners and Tadahito Iguchi of the White Sox certainly suggest baseball in Japan must be of a high quality. Perhaps more interesting is the fact that some sports arent even acknowledged in other countries as I found out in Russia.

Siberia does not have cable television nor can one pull up anything other than CNN. This made watching the World Series a bit difficult. Resorting to my usual tactic, I started hitting up my students for inside information on any parents that might own a satellite dish and could get the games. To my astonishment, not a single person knew the World Series was on or much of anything about baseball. Nobody had even heard of the Yankees! A few students had heard of the Los Angeles Dodgers, which was unbearable for a person from San Diego. It was time to set these innocents right!

The classrooms I taught in were pretty large. Everybody stand up! Desks were moved to the walls, books were placed in the appropriate places and the rules were written on the board. Forget constitutional law, we were going to play some baseball!

Institutions of higher learning are sacrosanct in Russia. It is serious business where deep thinking occurs, everyone studies like mad and the teacher is obeyed at all costs. For example, the students all stand up from their desks when a teacher enters and leaves the room. Serious stuff.

The game was proceeding nicely. Everyone was getting the hang of it, the rolled up paper ball was surviving and the broken desk leg wouldve put any bat to shame. And then the Dean walked by the door. And stopped. And stared.

The University Dean, Tatyana, was a great person and I liked here a lot. In turn, I am pretty sure she thought I was a raving lunatic, but didnt seem to mind since the students enjoyed my classes. Alas, I thought I had crossed a line with the baseball game.

The Dean opened the door and entered the room. Simultaneously, students looked for places to hide and I tried to come up with some reason why playing baseball was critical to the education of future judges. Tatyana took the bat from the hand of a student, looked at and stared at me. It was one of those stares where you could tell she was considering sending me back to San Diego. There would be no chance of explaining this one away.

After what seemed like minutes, but was probably five seconds, she did the last thing I expected. She took her stance.

The game was on!

Schools That Offer On-Line Programs

There are two main types of colleges that offer degrees you can complete from home. Regular universities and on-line universities usually offer a variety of on-line programs. Both programs are extremely flexible and available at a very inexpensive price. Because students are requesting a more flexible schedule many schools are adapting their regular curriculum.

Many campus school courses are now available in both the on-campus and online forms. So students who cannot attend a regular campus version of the class can still take it through the on-line form. Campus programs have had to add degrees online in order to keep up with the changing needs of their students.

The other main type of school that offers low cost on line degrees is a distance education college. These colleges specialize in a variety of different distance education courses. They usually offer teleconferences, virtual classrooms, and online courses. Many of these colleges have locations in major cities across the country. Students can then choose to attend classes at the physical school location or online.

Cost

Online universities do not usually charge more than a regular four-year school. In fact, many online universities are cheap compared to the high price of four-year schools. Both types of school offer assistance through federal financial aid, which can make college possible for low-income families.

Because of the financial aid and grants that are available to students, online degree programs are an affordable online college degree option. Most students who want to attend either type of university can apply for financial aid from the federal government. Some forms of financial aid are need based and some forms are given to all individuals who request it.

Busy Schedules

With the busy schedule that many individuals have today an online educational program is a great way to get the degree that is needed in order to move ahead in their current position. Most people who attend an online degree program will complete their bachelor’s degree in a similar amount of time as students who go to regular class meetings.

Online programs are a great alternative to the regular four-year university. Students need a variety in their education and can benefit from the degrees offered through on-line programs. Not all degrees can be offered through on-line training, but many programs can easily transfer from an on-campus course to an on-line course.

Before settling for an on-campus degree program, consider looking into online programs that might fit your busy schedule better.

Common Myths and Misconceptions about Anorexia

People have many misconceptions about anorexia. Due to poor understanding of the phenomenon or due to various popular myths surrounding eating disorders, most people assimilate denatured ideas regarding anorexia and the persons it affects.

Probably the most common misconception describes anorexia as an incurable, terrifying disease. Although anorexia can cause both physical and psychological harm, this type of eating disorder can be successfully treated and its undesirable effects can be overcome in time. In fact, through the means of an appropriate therapeutic program, the great majority of patients diagnosed with anorexia can be completely recovered from the disorder in a relatively short period of time.

Statistics indicate that more than 80 percent of people that have been confronted with anorexia at a certain point of their lives have been completely recovered with the means of psychological counseling and the help and encouragement of their families. Furthermore, most of the people affected by anorexia in the past have been able to achieve emotional balance, regaining full control over their lives. However, the truth is that anorexia needs to be timely discovered and prompt intervention is required when dealing with this type of disorder, as the affected persons can inflict themselves a lot of physical and emotional damage.

Another popular myth surrounding this type of eating disorder suggests the idea that anorexics do not eat. This idea is completely exaggerated and unfunded! Although anorexics are very restrictive with food and they indeed keep drastic diets, they are human beings after all and therefore they need to eat! In order to achieve their goal of having a slim body, anorexics usually avoid foods that are rich in calories and therefore they commonly follow vegetarian diets. Every once in a while, anorexics may also engage in binge-purge behaviors, eating exaggerated amounts of food at once, only to dispose of it right after, by vomiting or by using laxatives and diuretics. However, this behavior is more common among bulimics.

People also commonly confuse anorexia with bulimia. Although anorexia may resemble bulimia and people generally experience difficulties in separating between them, each of these two common types of eating disorders has various distinctive features. However, people with eating disorders can have oscillatory behaviors and anorexics can easily become bulimics, or vice versa.

First of all, from a physical point of view, the main difference between anorexics and bulimics is body weight. While most anorexics are underweight, bulimics often have an average or, above average body weight. Therefore, unlike the case of anorexics, it is even more difficult to identify a person who suffers from bulimia.

From a behavioral point of view, the main difference between anorexics and bulimics involves their eating habits. While anorexics commonly keep drastic diets and restrict their intake of calories, bulimics predominantly engage in binge-purge acts.

From a psychological perspective, the main difference between anorexics and bulimics is that people with anorexia have a stronger will and ambition than bulimics. While both these categories have a low self esteem and a distorted self-image, bulimics are often more likely to suffer from depression. Their contradictory, ambivalent behaviors that fluctuate between binging and purging food render them very vulnerable to developing feelings of guilt and confusion.

Tips On Preventing Auto Theft

With a vehicle stolen every 25 seconds in the U.S., motorists will feel a lot more secure by heeding these tips on preventing theft:

• The number-one step to reduce theft is to always remove your keys from the ignition and lock your vehicle, no matter where you are.

• Consider the use of anti-theft devices such as steering wheel locks and a wheel immobilizer. One new wheel immobilizer, called The Wheel Club, has been introduced by the makers of the well-known The Club. It is bright red in color, making it highly visible to a would-be thief. It was designed specifically with trailers in mind, is made of steel and takes seconds to install. With trailers being the way motorists move their valuables around-such as boats and objects they depend on for a livelihood like lawnmowers and construction tools-anti-theft devices are an affordable way to secure everything from trailers to all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) and tractors.

With crime and theft increasing in many areas, motorists should take responsibility for securing their own vehicles with affordable products that work. Other steps in preventing theft are:

• Do not park your vehicle in an isolated area where there are few passersby.

• Remove valuables from the vehicle and place them out of view in the trunk.

• Keep your vehicle keys separate from your house keys.

• Park with your front wheels turned sharply. This will make your vehicle difficult to tow away.

• When returning to your vehicle, always have your keys ready and always look under and around your vehicle before approaching it.

How To Determine Your Body pH Balance

Herbal programs may work more effectively when the pH is in balance. Get more from your supplementation program by balancing your pH. Your body is able to assimilate minerals and nutrients properly only when its pH is balanced. It is therefore possible for you to be taking healthy nutrients and yet be unable to absorb or use them. If you are not getting the results you expected from your nutritional or herbal program, look for an acid alkaline imbalance. Even the right herbal program may not work if your body’s pH is out of balance.

Note that a food’s acid or alkaline-forming tendency in the body has nothing to do with the actual pH of the food itself. For example, lemons are very acidic, however the end-products they produce after digestion and assimilation are very alkaline so lemons are alkaline-forming in the body.

Likewise, meat will test alkaline before digestion but it leaves very acidic residue in the body so, like nearly all animal products, meat is very acid-forming.

The correct ratio of acid and alkaline forming foods is difficult to know since the balance is altered by chewing, food preparation, individual lifestyle, genetics, exercise, and mental outlook. However, those prone to infections, viruses, excess mucus problems and other toxic acidic conditions need to increase their alkaline diet.

The Saliva PH test is a simple test you can do to measure your susceptibility to cancer, heart disease, osteoporosis, arthritis, and many other degenerative diseases.
There is a simple way of measuring saliva pH. First, you must wait at least 2 hours after eating. Fill your mouth with saliva and then swallow it. Repeat this step to help ensure that your saliva is clean. Then the third time, put some of your saliva onto the pH paper.

The pH paper should turn blue. This indicates that your saliva is slightly alkaline at a healthy pH of 7.4. If it is not blue, compare the color with the chart that comes with the pH paper. If your saliva is acid (below pH of 7.0) wait two hours and repeat the test.

Some health food stores and pharmacies stock pH paper. What you are looking for is narrow range pH paper measuring pH 4.5 to 7.5 or pH 4.5 to 8.5. These pH strips to measure acid/alkaline balance pH belong in every family medicine kit, right beside the thermometer to measure body temperature.

Halloween Bird Watching The Dark Side

Bird watching is just about the most unobjectionable hobby in the world. With Halloween approaching, however, it is time to discuss the dark, dark, dark side of birding.

Bird watching enthusiasts are always looking for good spots to whip out the binoculars and visually hunt for a new life bird. There are really only two potential downsides to this for bird watchers.

What Are You Looking At?

For backyard birding, one runs the risk of neighbors thinking you are a pervert of some type trying to look in their windows with your binoculars. This can usually be overcome by spreading the word in the neighborhood that youre an avid birder and the binoculars are not pointing at anyones windows. Really.

If this doesnt work, invite the offended neighbors over to do some watching. They will either grow bored and leave or get hooked. Either way, youll benefit and no longer have to deal with negative gossip.

Buffy the Bird Watcher

Cemeteries! Not just for demons, vampires and Buffy the Vampire Slayer!

A nasty little secret in the bird watching world is the fact cemeteries are good places to bird watch. Generally, the cemetery is quite, has lots of trees and hunters typically arent bold enough to have a go at the fowl. In short, a perfect place for birds to congregate and you to watch.

Now, it goes without saying that bird watching in a cemetery requires a certain etiquette. First, the staff at the cemetery may have a get the hell off the property policy towards birding enthusiasts. This can quickly be overcome by explaining that uncle/aunt [look at closest grave stone] was an avid bird watcher and you are bringing their equipment in remembrance. A little wailing may help with senior staff, while cigarettes seem to be preferred by staff carrying shovels.

Having dealt with the staff, small mention should be made regarding actual funerals. If a dearly beloved is being interred, do not pursue your birding within site of the event! Doing so could result in serious physical injury, as funeral goers do not seem to react well to a person with binoculars staring in the direction of funeral and writing down things. Keep in mind emotions are justifiably high. This means they can outrun you.

Typically, most will cluck in dismay at the idea of bird watching in a cemetery. You may be doing so now. Ah, but as Halloween approaches and youre dying for a new sighting, you just might start to feel differently.

After all, where else will you be able to finally see Vladious Vampirous in its natural habitat?

Choosing A Business Gift

The business gift that you choose says a lot about you. It provides for your partners a look into the appreciation that you actually have for them. While you may not think much about it, thinking that a gift is a gift, they do. So, choosing the right business gift is quite important. The question is, how can you do this?

To choose the business gift that will work, follow these guidelines:

Purchase based on value and meaning rather than price. If you should shop with a $200 dollar fruit basket, they wont appreciate it as much as $50 tickets to their favorite basketball teams next game.

Purchase a gift that you know they will love. Find out something about them. Do they love the opera? Perhaps you noticed that they love a certain restaurant. Find out just what it is that they enjoy. Taking this small bit of time will ensure that your business gift is well valued.

Don’t make a big deal about it. Don’t present your gift in front of an office full of people to outdo others. If you think that the boss doesn’t notice you showing off, he does. Not to mention that this can cause competition and then you’ll be spending a whole lot more. Just be polite about presenting your business gift.

Include a personal message. Thank them, tell them you appreciate them. Provide them with a thought of friendship or pride that you may think means something to them. No, don’t try to win them over here. Be honest about it.

If you are purchasing a business gift for a client, make sure to include that note of personal thanks. Don’t just have the secretary stick your card in the envelope. Take a few minutes of your time and make sure that whoever you are sending your business gift to, will really appreciate your thoughtfulness.

These scores are provided to lenders by the three major credit bureaus: Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. Before we get into some tips how to improve credit scores, it pays to review the major areas that determine your FICO score.

1. Payment history on credit and retail store cards, loans and mortgages.
2. Amount that you owe. Credit agencies look at how many accounts have balances and the proportion of that balance to the credit line.
3. How long is your credit history? The longer the better.
4. New credit accounts. Applying for a bunch of credit cards all at once can hurt your score.
5. Different credit types, such as mortgages, retail loans, credit cards and installment loans.
6. How many late payments do you have?

7 tips to improve credit scores

1. Pay your bills on time. Your payment history is a major factor (35% of your FICO score) in determining your credit score. If you pay your bills late, or had an account referred to collections, your credit score will take a major hit.

2. Sign up for online banking and make sure your regular recurring bills are paid automatically. This way you will not forget a payment that will wind up reducing your credit score.

3. Increase your credit limit. Another large factor is the amount of your debt in relation to your credit limit. If you have a card with a $10,000 credit limit and your balance is $9,000, this will not help to improve your score. To make the debt/credit limit ratio look better, you can try to call your credit card company and request an increase in your credit limit. Don’t use the extra credit though! That defeats the whole purpose and puts you further in debt!

4. Don’t apply for many cards at once. This will not improve your credit score because this is a characteristic of high credit risk groups.

5. Dont ever close an open credit card account. If you pay off a credit card down to a zero balance, leave it open. Remember that a positive factor for your credit score is how much available credit you have at your disposal when compared to your credit balance, in addition to the length of your credit history.

6. Apply for loans within a two-week period. Every time you request a loan and the lender pulls your credit report, it can hurt your score. It is part of the FICO formula that reasons “this person is trying to apply for credit and loans and possibly be trying to live way beyond their means!” If you keep the loan process within a two-week period, all of the credit report lookups are bundled together as one single request!

7. Check for errors on your credit report. Examine your credit report for errors and contact the credit reporting agencies to fix any errors on your credit report.

If you take action and follow these tips, you will be able to give your credit score and immediate boost and gradually increase it even more as time passes. The major keys are to pay your bills on time and reduce your debt amounts when compared to your credit limit. This has a twofold benefit of improving your credit score and reducing your debt.
